Mark Zuckerberg has joined the Facebook group Secret Tel Aviv. Secret Tel Aviv boasts 220,000 members and is the Times Square of Facebook activity for foreigners and Israelis alike who want to sell furniture, find apartments, appeal for romantic partners, post funny pictures, or, like any gathering of Jewish people, complain about something. When I joined three years ago it had 70,000 members and is growing rapidly with a jobs site, events newsletter and much more. Israelis interestingly trend towards using Facebook groups for quite a lot, more so than other places that I’ve lived. Zuckerberg had this to say about his joining: “Hey — I’m glad to be here to stay more connected with Tel Aviv. It’s been too long since my last visit. Thanks for creating this community!” Source
Franklin Templeton Investments, a global investment management company, last week inaugurated its office in Israel to support sales of its investment products and to service existing clients in the country. They want to be open to scouting for acquisition, partnership and talent opportunities in the fintech sector in Israel. The office will be in Herziliyah and appointed Uzi Yitzhak to spearhead its Israel business. This comes amid a change in local regulation that allows global investment managers to offer offshore products to Israeli customers directly and not, as previously required, via a local manager or a bank. The Technion — Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa (often regarded as the MIT of Israel) has won a NIS 10 million grant from the Council for Higher Education to set up an entrepreneurship and innovation center to be called the t-hub. The Technion was recently ranked 39th in the world in the number of patents registered in the US in 2017. NSO Group, an Israeli cybersecurity company owned by Francisco Partners, reportedly is in talks to buy Fifth Dimension, an Israeli developer of intelligence prediction software that has raised VC funding from CerraCap Ventures, Columbus Nova Technology Partners and UST Global US News & World Report. Axios
Symantec also bought Javelin Networks, a cybersecurity company focused on Microsoft Active Directory (AD) attacks. Javelin, originally founded in Israel but now located in the U.S., raised around $5 million last year from RSL Capital, Hillsven and UpWest Labs. Axios
Overwolf, an Israeli app store for PC gamers, raised $16 million led by Intel Capital. Axios
Taranis, an Israeli agriculture intelligence platform, has raised $20 million in Series B funding. Viola Ventures led, and was joined by return backers Wilbur-Ellis, Nutrien and Sumitomo. Axios
Valens, an Israeli car chip startup, has raised $63 million from Linse Capitaland Oppenheimer Asset Management. Globes
Nyxoah, an Israeli-Belgium company with a hypoglossal nerve stimulation therapy for the treatment of sleep apnea, has raised €15 million in a financing round led by Cochlear (ASX: COH), an Australian implantable hearing solutions company. Globes
Amimon, an Israeli chip company, has been acquired for $55 million by UK-based Vitec. Shareholders of Amimon included Walden, Evergreen and Cedar funds, along with Motorola Solutions. Globes
Samanage, a provider of service management software to organizations on a SaaS model, has raised $30 million in its D financing round led by Morgan Stanley Expansion Capital, joined by existing investors Marker LLC, Viola Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, Gemini Israel Ventures, and Vintage Investment Partners. ConTIPI Medical, an Israeli company with non-surgical and disposable vaginal solutions for women with various Pelvic Floor Disorders, has completed a $3 million financing round led by CEO Dr. Elan Ziv, medical investor Zeev Bronfeld, Boris Krasny, Capital Point, and New Pharm. Globes
Bonobo, a Tel Aviv-based conversational AI startup, completed a $4.4 million Seed round led by G20 and Capri Ventures. Calcalist
RayCatch, a Tel Aviv-based startup developing artificial intelligence-based diagnostics and optimization software for the solar energy market, has raised $4.5 million led by Royal DSM and BayWa AG. Calcalist
