Tuesday Tech Update

The Jewish holiday season is over, and it is almost autumn in most places (except Israel, of course). Time for the Israel America Tech List with the latest on Israel’s medical tech and research.

Tylenol Woes: Israeli researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem found another link between prolonged use of drugs containing acetaminophen during pregnancy, and increased risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The research, led by Dr. Ilan Matok at the Institute for Drug Research in the School of Pharmacy at the Hebrew University’s Faculty of Medicine, and doctoral student Reem Masarwa, found that prolonged exposure to acetaminophen during pregnancy was associated with a 30 percent increase in relative risk for ADHD (compared to those who did not take acetaminophen during pregnancy) and a 20 percent increase in relative risk for ASD. It was published in April in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Source

Parkinson’s Breathalyzer: A team of scientists at Technion — Israel Institute of Technology has developed a device they say can detect early-stage Parkinson’s disease using a breath test. In a July study published in the scientific journal ACS Chemical Neuroscience, the scientists detailed their findings following testing of the device on the exhaled breath of 29 Parkinson’s disease patients after initial diagnosis by an experienced neurologist, and 19 control subjects of similar age. heir results, according to the research, showed accuracy levels of 81 percent. Opportunity of the Week The Merage Institute 2019 Leadership Program for Home Land Security and Cyber Executives is a new initiative that has been announced by its partner, the Combating Terrorism and Urban Navigation Technology Startup challenge, a $220k yearly startup challenge that opens in the spring.

The Merage Institute is a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to helping Israeli startups succeed in the US Market. The 2019 Leadership Program for Home Land Security and Cyber Executiveswill run from January 13–25th, 2019. The program is free. Source Defense, an Israeli provider of prevention solution for website supply-chain attacks, raised $10 million in Series A funding. AllegisCyber led, and was joined by Global Brain, Connecticut Innovations and return backer JVP. Source Defense

MeMed, an Israeli developer of a point-of-care immune system diagnostics, raised $70 million in Series C funding from Ping An Global Voyager Fund, Foxconn, Caesarea Medical Holdings, Clal Insurance, Phoenix Insurance, OurCrowd, Social Capital, WTI and Horizons Ventures. Axios

TransEnterix (NYSE: TRXC) has announced the acquisition of Israel-based surgical analytics company MST Medical Surgery Technologies. The Yokneam-based company has developed advanced image-based software that empowers robotic surgery. MST Medical will receive $5.8 million in cash and 3,150,000 shares of TransEnterix common stock. In the second phase, TransEnterix will pay $6.6 million in cash or stock within a year of closing. Globes

JFrog, an Israeli DevOps technology company, has announced the acquisition of Israeli DevOps consultancy company Trainologic. No financial details were disclosed. Globes

Forter, an Israel e-commerce fraud prevention company, announced the completion of a $50 million Series D financing round led by March Capital Partners with participation from Salesforce Ventures and previous investors Sequoia Capital, New Enterprise Associates (NEA) and Scale Venture Partners. Globes

Flipkart, India’s largest e-commerce marketplace, has announced that it has acquired Israeli startup Upstream Commerce, a automated competitive pricing and product analysis solutions company. No financial details were disclosed but sources close to the deal say the acquisition is for about $30 million. Globes

GrubHub (NYSE: GRUB), a US online and mobile food-ordering and delivery marketplace has entered into an agreement to acquire Israeli campus food ordering platform Tapingo for $150 million. Globes

BrandTotal, an Israeli brand marketing company announced the closing of a $6 million Series A financing round led by Flint Capital and with the participation of NHN Investment, One Way Ventures,and FJ Labs and previous investors Glilot Capital Partners and Keshet Dick Clark Productions. Globes

Snyk, an Israeli open source security platform, announced it has completed a $22 million Series B financing round led by Accel, with participation from GV and existing investors Boldstart Ventures, and Heavybit. Globes
