Do You Want Arsenic in Your Water?
In the wake of President Trump and EPA head Scott Pruitt dismantling the EPA’s budget and removing safeguards like the Clean Water Rule comes a story of Dominion Energy violating not only the clean water rule but also the Clean Water Act.
A Federal judge ruled that Dominion had violated the Clean Water Act but that they do not have to move the 3 million ton mountain of coal ash that is responsible for the poisonous metalloid arsenic leaking into the Elizabeth River. Instead they have to monitor the 150 tons of arsenic that is sitting in unlined pits so close to the river.
I don’t want arsenic in my water or my fish. And personally I do not trust a judge, nor the energy company that is avoiding a $600 Million cost of moving the coal ash to a lined landfill on higher ground.
It’s high time that people have more information on what’s in their water so they can stop companies from polluting this essential life-sustaining resource that we all pay for!
Coal companies should not be allowed to decide how they dispose of their waste, particularly when they violate federal law. The intended rescinding of the Clean Water Rule, which was enacted specifically to prevent this, and the budget cuts at the EPA will further jeopardize our water resources.
Let’s stay vigilant and continue to make the massive destruction of our water resources front page news.
